Handwriting – Useful tool in
Crime Solving

Peggy Walla, CHAI Director of Forensic Sciences

In a recent internet chat with some Forensic Consultants, the question/subject of "sex offender" or "rapist" profiling came up.

I challenged the Forensic Consultants group to send me handwriting samples of known rapists and handwriting samples of non-rapists.  I did receive 5 samples from a Senior Lecturer in Criminal Profiling, NOLC, UK.

As an analyst, the ability to distinguish personality traits as seen in a handwriting sample, can be and should be considered as a tool in helping to solve crimes.  The following list was given by the Forensic Consultants for rapist profiling.

Disorganized Asocial Offender

Organized Nonsocial Offender

  • Power Reassurance

  • Power Assertive

  • Anger-Retaliatory

  • Anger-Excitation (Sadistic)

Gang Rapes

  • Male Rape

  • Street Gang/Abduction Rape

  • Acquaintance Rape

To my knowledge, there is no "handwriting" data profile (rapist specific)--YET.  The standard of evidence based tests using non-sex offenders with known sex offenders (same age, race, demographics, standard writing sample) in a blind study has not been completed.

Using the above profile list, what traits (stroke formations) would a handwriting analyst look for if called on for a rapist profile consultation?

Send your trait list to me:  president@chaiuniversal.org

In the meantime, I will get permission to share the 5 samples I received.
