Dear Analyst

Dear Analyst,

Lately my handwriting is so bad, even I can’t read it!  Why is this happening? Is there something wrong with me?

-- Yvonne, CA

Dear Yvonne,

There could be several reasons why a person’s handwriting is illegible.  A person could be under a great deal of stress and be emotionally distraught as a result of a recent event.  Has a traumatic situation recently occurred in your life, like a death in the family or an accident?  Another reason could be medically related.  Have you any disturbing symptoms? Headache, pain or dizziness? If you are on any medication, was the strength recently changed?  Or were you just put on new medication?  If so than a visit to the physician is in order.

If none of these things relate to why your handwriting has become a scrawl, then have a look at how you are feeling the next time you write.  Are you in a hurry to write a message?  Do you feel you are in a rush to get things done?  Sometimes people become hurried in their work and as a force of habit they have very little time to spend on writing reports out neatly especially if the text is not going to be read by others.  Often counselors have to handwrite their reports and that can be quite tiring.  Sometimes, a writer might not think it important enough to write legibly for others. Also, something to consider, is there a need to remove self from others?  Often with illegible handwriting there is a lack of communication.  What does the writer not want others to know and why is he/she withdrawing from others?

Hope these various explanations are of benefit to you.  Not all handwriting changes are a result of anything negative however, it is important to pay attention when one’s writing habits suddenly change for no apparent reason.

Dear Analyst,

My girlfriend’s teenaged daughter is quite artistic but her doodles tend to be of a rather dark nature.  Dripping blood, knives, and skeletons are drawn well but are rather disturbing to me.  Should she be concerned?

-- Jessica, OH

Dear Jessica,

Absolutely!  According to Andrea McNichol in her book, Handwriting Analysis, Putting It To Work For You, doodling anything that is disturbing, ugly or dealing with death indicates a troubled individual who is very unhappy or depressed and is capable of engaging in antisocial acts.  The mother should consider professional help for her daughter as soon as possible.  Teenagers are at a vulnerable stage in life, seeking to discover where they fit and who they are.  Easily influenced and short on experience can lead a teen down a confusing path if led by peers of questionable integrity.  Maintaining an open dialogue between parents and children is important.  With loving support, a parent can guide a child towards balance and safety.

Dear Analyst,

What does it mean when the t stem is slanted strongly to the right and the t bar has a strong downward slant to the right as well? Sometimes the t bar is strictly on the right side of the stem but still slanting downward.
